Parris Island, SC
Parris Island, South Carolina is a land composed primarily of salt marsh. There are 8,095 acres of property on Parris Island, but only 3,262 acres are habitable. The remaining land is mostly marsh.
Parris Island is most widely known for its military training and recruiting. Male recruits began training in this Lowcountry community in 1915. Female recruits soon joined their ranks in 1949. Marines have called Parris Island home during every major conflict of the 20th Century. During World War I, 41,000 recruits were trained in Parris Island. World War II summoned another 205,000 recruits to the marshes. And the Vietnam War brought in a whopping 250,000 recruits to Parris Island.
Parris Island is depicted most famously in Stanley Kubrick's movie Full Metal Jacket, with R. Lee Ermey portraying a memorable drill instructor. This film depicted the spirit of Parris Island as the training ground of America’s military backbone.
Today, Parris Island stands as a Patriotic star in the Beaufort community. Currently, all male Marines east of the Mississippi River and all female Marines receive their training on Parris Island.
