Fishing in Beaufort
Fishing in Beaufort
If you enjoy hunting for aggressive saltwater species, making challenging casts, or being in a diverse natural environment, you will love the experience the Beaufort area waters have to offer. The inshore waters of Saint Helena and Port Royal Sound form an estuary that is made up of more than ten saltwater rivers and hundreds of creeks. This myriad of inlets and waterways offer great opportunities for any fisherman, and with the expansiveness of its waters and the large tidal shifts that take place every six hours, the lowcountry provides a unique and challenging environment.
Each season brings with it variations in the fishery. Here you will find Redfish, Speckled Sea Trout, Flounder, and Black Drum year round, and seasonal fish such as Ladyfish, Tarpon, Whiting, and Jack. Early spring brings with it Cobia. These incredibly strong fish average 20 to 40 pounds and Port Royal Sound is one of only two places on the east coast where Cobia come inshore in large numbers.
Salt and fresh water fishing and shrimping are available off many of Beaufort's piers and there are several local outfitters who will provide a day of in-shore fishing, sport fishing, bait fishing, trolling, or bottom fishing around Beaufort and the sea islands area.
